Find of the Week

During all of my thrifting, antiquing, vintage-ing, etc, there's always something that stands out! This week it was a great lemon yellow vintage-inspired chiffon dress.

The dress isn't vintage, it's from the American Living line at JC Penney. I really didn't even know how 50s-esque the dress was until I got it home, cleaned it, and tried it on.

Doesn't it remind you of Sandy's prom dress from Grease?

Of course, it wouldn't be fair if I didn't admit there's a huge problem with this dress. The zipper is broken. I knew this when I bought it, but I had to have it, and the price was too good to pass up. Anyone know how to fix a zipper that's stuck?

What was your best thrift or vintage find this week??

  1. Oh, dear...I wish I knew how to help you!! Usually, I just fidgit with a stuck zipper enough so it'll cooperate with me! I found a brown sweater this past week (from this post) that had a stuck zipper that I took care of right there in the store. Big relief, too, since I can't wait to wear it, and I need the zipper to work! :o)

  2. Ok see if my mum were here she would totally help you with that (she's visiting someone right now)! I buy brand new dresses all the time for $1 or $2 with broken pain-in-the-butt hidden zippers and as long as there are no teeth missing you can usually fix them. I believe my mom even fixes them if the teeth are missing near the top or bottom too. Are there teeth missing? I absolutely LOVE that dress BTW are you keeping it for yourself?

    XOXO~ Renee

  3. Thanks Christy and Renee!

Renee, the teeth are all there. It seems like the zipper is really close to the fabric. And I'm totally keeping it for myself!!

  5. Zipper stuck? Isnt it a candle you run down it so it moves smoothly.Or is it the fabric sticking? you may have to unpick the stitches in that spot and resew maybe? Hope you get it fixed.

  6. It is gorgeous, very Sandy indeed. If the zipper is just stuck, I sometimes get some cooking oil and a paintbrush and careful paint oil over the sticking areas until it runs smoothly (avoiding getting any on the fabric). If the zip is actually busted though, the dry-cleaners will put in a new one usually for £10 ($16 approx) x

  7. Gorgeous dress you lucky thing! Personally if the zip was being a pain, i'd take it out and re-insert not so close to the fabric or replace if you think it would be better. If you can't do the zip yourself, like penny said above dry cleaners can do things like that, or if you know someone who can do it for free even better.

  8. Gorgeous dress...and totally vintage looking!!
Sounds like the zipper may need to come out and have a new one inserted...not a huge issue, but a little finicky. I've done that before though...get a GREAT deal on something that just needs a little tlc. (your local dry cleaners can prob do it for a couple bucks if you don't feel like tackling it yourself)

    Great find!!

  9. if it is just stuck, a little dish washing soap should do the trick! just put a dab above and below the stuck point and then let it get inside the stuck part. Wiggle around and it should lube it up and work.

  12. Absolutely adorable, if the latch is stuck alone, it needs to lubricate, check for any missing tooth in the zipper. Grease is a spectacular film that is timeless.

  13. Gorgeous dress, and yes totally makes me think of Sandy! Such a pretty spring lemon colour. As for the zip, if the teeth are metal, sometimes, running a pencil over the teeth can help it run smoother and so may help the stuck zip- I'm not sure how it works something to do with the lead. I used to work in a costume department and we did this all the time with the old costumes. I'm not sure if it still works with a plastic coated zip, anyway probably worth a go! Failing that I would replace the zip.
Thanks for visiting my blog. x
